Original creditors (banks) almost never agree to PFD. This works mostly with junk debt buyers like Midland, Portfolio Recovery, LVNV, etc.
If you're using FICO 9, FICO 10, or VantageScore 3+, paid collections are already ignored — PFD matters most for mortgage lending, which still uses older FICO models.
Acknowledging an old debt can reset your state's statute of limitations. Check your SOL before sending.

🎯 Negotiation reality

Opening offer: 25-40% of the claimed amount. Debt buyers often bought the debt for 4-8 cents on the dollar — they have enormous margin.
Target settlement: 40-60% of the claimed amount.
They'll counter. That's normal. Stay firm on the "written agreement first" requirement.
Get it in writing, signed by them, BEFORE you pay. If they verbally agree but won't put it in writing, walk away.
Pay via money order or cashier's check — creates a clean paper trail.
1099-C warning: Forgiven debt over $600 may generate a 1099-C (taxable income). Budget for that.
